Karolinska Institutet

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world´s leading medical universities. Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of human health through research and education. Karolinska Institutet accounts for over 40 per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden and offers the country´s broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences. Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

KI partners cover 20 years of experience in vascular disease biobanking, histology, epidemiological, clinical and diagnostic imaging data collection. Biobank of Karolinska Endarterectomies (BiKE, founded at KI in 2002) is today one of world’s largest tissue biobanks in the field of carotid atherosclerosis. It houses biomaterial (plaques, plasma and PBMCs) from nearly 2000 patients undergoing surgery for high-grade carotid stenosis in the region of Stockholm. BiKE combines orthogonal epidemiological, clinical, follow-up, diagnostic and multi-omics data, which will be employed in Pathfinder and Use cases pipelines within the NextGen project. KI partners hold unique expertise in single- and multi-omics data integrations, as well as functional association studies of genetic variants in connection with the underlying omics data through quantitative trait locus analyses (QTLs). KI partners have previously participated in several EU FP7, Horizon 2020 and Marie-Sklodowska Curie ITN projects.
